SkyBitz of Dulles, Va., has launched a low-cost asset tracking system using a high-orbit satellite, standard AA battery power and Global Locating System (GLS) -- an alternative to Global Positioning System (GPS).

According to SkyBitz CEO Michael Fitzgerald, GLS determines location without using GPS satellites. Fitzgerald said GLS brings improvement in cost, coverage, power consumption and ease of installation. GLS is generally accurate within 15 meters, and the GLS communicator provides multiyear battery life on inexpensive AA batteries without recharging or external power, he said.
SkyBitz communicates over the M-Sat geosychronous satellite, which is also used by competitor Vistar's Globalwave tracking system. The high-orbit satellite provides near universal coverage.
According to Fitzgerald, SkyBitz units are currently being tested by major truckload fleets. SkyBitz communicator units will sell in large quantities for about $375 each. Once-a-day location service available to users over a web site will begin at about $7.50 a month for large-fleet users. Prices for smaller fleets will be higher, he said.
