Caterpillar Inc. has filed papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission to implement a series of temporary manufacturing shut downs and employee layoffs in the fourth quarter because of lower industry demand for heavy-duty truck engines.

The Peoria, Ill.-based company filed a Form 8-K with the SEC that says up to 3,270 management, salaried and manufacturing employees will be affected, according to Dow Jones newswires. Included are 470 full-time hourly employees whose layoffs were announced in early September.
The cuts will affect Caterpillar's Mossville, Ill., engine center; the Mapleton, Ill., foundry; and the company's fuel systems facilities in Pontiac, Ill., Jefferson, Ga. and Thomasville, Ga., according to the filing.
Caterpillar said eligible employees, in addition to unemployment insurance, will receive company benefits to ease the burden of layoff.
The company also said it's making every effort to minimize any hardship for its employees and their families.
