New Jersey’s governor wants his state to become the second to outlaw the use of handheld mobile phones while driving.

According to published reports. Gov. James McGreevey is pushing for legislation that would require only hands-free phones to be used in motor vehicles. This is similar to a law that went into effect in New York earlier this year.
There is already a bill in the state legislature to ban the use of cell phones by motorists. It is scheduled to be heard by a committee later this month. The sponsors say they welcome McGreevey’s stance.
Thirty-one states this year are considering or have considered legislation regulating the use of cell phones while driving, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
