A new suite of technologies from Delphi Corp. has been designed to help improve fleet security, according to David B. Wohleen, Delphi's electronics and mobile communications sector president.

Known as TruckSecure, it is able to help identify and authorize drivers, track and guide vehicles, and shut down a vehicle if it is driven into a prohibited area.
"The threat of terrorists using a truck transporting hazardous material as a weapon is all too real," Wohleen said. "TruckSecure adds security for the transportation of dangerous materials, as well as for sensitive locations, such as airports, power plants and other specific buildings and installations," he said. "TruckSecure is also extremely resistant to tampering. If key components are damaged, the truck will automatically shut down and you simply can't drive it."
TruckSecure is a complete hardware and services system that uses Delphi's truck computing platform and vehicle integration capabilities coupled with services provided by partners, including MobileAria and The O'Gara Co. It is a next-generation system of Delphi's Truck PC. The system fits in a standard-size radio package and features interactive speech technology, connectivity, information-on-demand, enhanced entertainment and, now, vehicle security capabilities.
Wohleen said TruckSecure functions include password protected access to truck operation; GPS satellite and cellular technologies to monitor the truck's location; specialized software that creates boundaries around sensitive locations and recognizes when the truck crosses those parameters; and a system that brings a truck to a complete stop if it enters the restricted area.
