Caterpillar announced a round of layoffs on Friday, due to an expected decline in new truck engine sales and lower emissions requirements that take effect Oct. 1.

The cuts for 470 workers are scheduled to take effect Oct. 4 at the company’s engine plant in Mossville, Ill., and at its fuel systems facility in Pontiac, Mich. Caterpillar is also releasing close to another 300 supplemental workers, who were hired to handle a recent increase in workload due to spike in engine demand triggered by “pre-buys” of engines before the Oct. 1 deadelins.
Caterpillar spokesman Carl Volz told the Journal Star newspaper the layoff of full-time, hourly workers will be temporary. How long the cuts last depends on engine demand during the final quarter of the year.
Caterpillar is one of several truck engine makers and truck manufacturers that have announced cuts due to lower expected sales in the fourth quarter.
