Truck tonnage took a tumble in July, but overall it is above levels from a year ago.

The American Trucking Associations' Monthly Truck Tonnage index fell 8.7% in June, erasing a 3.6% gain in May. While the June decline is the second largest drop in that month during the last 12 years, when tonnage numbers from each quarter are compared, tonnage increased 3.2% during the second quarter of the year compared to the same quarter a year ago.
The report notes there are still strong indications that truck tonnage should continue to increase over the long term, but month to month drops may happen. Each time tonnage has dropped since September 2001, the bottom has been higher than the previous drop. This trend is expected to been seen when July’s number are available, when a strong increase may follow June's big drop.
