West Virginia is studying whether bridges on the state Turnpike can handle heavy haul permitted loads up to 380,000 pounds.

The state Parkways Authority is evaluating 117 bridges, using computer modeling for various load configurations. Eight girder bridges are of special concern. The models will show whether restrictions are needed for some kinds of loads, such as closing bridges to other traffic while the truck crosses.
The state is considering allowing the “superload” rigs as an economic development issue.
