Ryder System, Miami, announced it has selected Qualcomm as its wireless mobile communications on-board computer provider and will use the OmniTracs and OmniExpress systems for Ryder and its customers' vehicles.

The communication system will link the vehicles to the Ryder Customer Response Center (RCRC) and provide two-way messaging and vehicle tracking capability. The RCRC provides emergency roadside assistance to Ryder's customers throughout the United States and Canada 24 hours a day.
Ryder owns and maintains a fleet of 170,000 vehicles and we need to serve customers wherever and whenever the need arises," said Jim Cade, Ryder's vice president of maintenance. "By integrating the Qualcomm mobile communications system with our RCRC, drivers are better able to communicate breakdowns on a real-time basis, thus improving technician response time and most importantly driver safety."
