Old Dominion Freight Line has completed a successful trial of Aether wireless service and has begun a rollout to its fleet of 1,700 trucks.

Old Dominion transports primarily less-than-truckload shipments of consumer goods, capital goods and textiles to a diversified customer base across 38 states. The fleet typically make several stops a day, and the new wireless application will allow the company to monitor and improve upon almost every cycle in its pick-up and delivery system.
The new application incorporates components of Aether's technology for mobile data synchronization and optimum performance of data delivery over wireless networks. The application runs on a Symbol 7500 handheld with embedded WinCE operation system, while Aether provides wireless connectivity and support. ODFL determined that the application would benefit its entire fleet after a successful trial.
The application provides proof of delivery, on-demand pick-up notification, pick-up and delivery status/timing, over/short/damaged/emergency notification, and cross-dock operations (allows for real-time outbound planning of incoming goods).
"We are very excited to roll out this empowering new wireless application to our entire fleet," said Terry Hutchins, Vice President of Field Services at Old Dominion Freight Line. "After extensive testing with Aether, we believe the system will continue to support our efforts to provide solutions through technology to our client base. This technology will allow us to provide more expedient and real time information to our customers. It will also further enhance our ability to plan within our operational network.”
