As a grand jury continues to investigate allegations of wrongdoing in the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, Gov. Mike Easley announced he will move the DMV enforcement section to the same agency that oversees the Highway Patrol.

Last week Easley announced a transition team that will plan the move, which is expected to take at least a year.
The DMV is currently overseen by the Department of Transportation. A federal grand jury is investigating charges that some DMV enforcement officers and supervisors fixed tickets and ignored truck safety violations in exchange for bribes, gifts, and political donations from trucking companies.
State lawmakers say legislative action is necessary to make the move, but he governor’s office says the governor can do it with an executive order.
