North Carolina’s Division of Motor Vehicles could lose millions in federal funding if federal investigators find the DMV ignored federal safety violations in return for campaign donations.

According to published reports, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Inspector General is investigating allegations uncovered by the Asheville Citizen-Times newspaper.
The loss of federal funds is an extreme sanction; another possibility would be closer federal oversight of how North Carolina spends those funds.
In a four-month investigation, the Citizen-Times has reported on allegations of bribe-taking, ticket-fixing, on-the-job politicking and unequal enforcement of trucking laws in the western part of the state. Among them: Truck safety violations being ignored in trucks belonging to companies that were heavy political contributors.
A federal grand jury has also subpoenaed inspectors as it begins its investigation into possible criminal allegations, and a former inspector is suing the state, alleging similar complaints.
