Updated 3 p.m. EDT -- Mexican officials Wednesday found a load of sodium cyanide that was stolen
in a truck hijacking more than two weeks ago.
The drums were discovered near a dirt road about 80 miles north of Mexico City. The driver of the truck reportedly left the main highway to take a shortcut on a secondary road. This was against regulations, as was stopping to help two men in what looked like a disabled car, who pulled guns on the driver and stole the truck.
Because of concerns that highly poisonous chemical, used in mining, might be used in a terrorist attack, Mexican authorities mounted a large search for the cyanide. U.S. Customs and state agencies were also alerted to be on the lookout for the blue drums.
Police believe run-of-the-mill cargo thieves, not terrorist, were behind the May 10 hijacking. When they realized what the drums contained, they apparently dumped them
off the back of a truck.
