The Virginia trucking industry wants to know just how much trucks will have to pay to use mandatory truck toll lanes that will be used to expand Interstate 81. But the state is balking.

Both the Virginia Trucking Assn. and the Roanoke Times filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking the information.
The I-81 expansion will be done as a joint public/private project between the state and a private company called Star Solutions. The state’s Public-Private Transportation Act gave Star Solutions 90 days of confidentiality while competing bids could be submitted. The 90-day period expired last week, but state officials still refused to release the information.
The trucking industry has fought the plan, saying it’s double taxation and will force trucks to clog secondary highways as they avoid the tolls.
