A 13-year-driver for United Parcel Service has self-published a book criticizing the working conditions at the Atlanta-based carrier.

James R. Earls of Huntsville, Ala., wrote “The Big Brown Lie.” In it, he claims that UPS drivers and distribution center workers suffer about 60,000 injuries a year and are more susceptible to ulcers, high blood pressure and substance abuse. The information comes from a University of Illinois study commissioned by the Teamsters union.
Dave DeDona, UPS communications director for the Southeast region, told reporters that UPS’ safety record speaks for itself, and that working conditions and labor relations are discussed only with the union.
Earls also has criticism for the Teamsters, saying old-guard union leadership poorly represents its members and resists reform and that there is corruption both at the local and national levels of the union.
Although Earls told the Huntsville Times that UPS “do not want this book out,” DeDona defended Earls’ right to free speech.
