The California Highway Patrol plans to buy eight nuclear detection devices to use at weigh stations.

The detection devices use gamma X-rays to determine if a cargo container has radiactive materials inside. The devices are intended to help prevent terrorists from smuggling bomb-making materials into the state.
According to the Contra Costa Times, It’s part of Gov. Gray Davis’ plan to broaden the state’s anti-terrorism efforts; the governor has set aside more than $3 million to buy the devices. The state expects the federal government to help pay for the devices, but will go ahead and buy them before getting the federal funds.
The devices will be used at seven truck scales: Calexico, Otay Mesa, Cordelia, Truckee, Indio, Carson, Cottonwood and Gilroy.
