Americas Systems has integrated wireless functionality into its online terminal management system, eTERM, creating a more powerful tool for tracking container movements through inland depots.
Ironbound Intermodal Inc., operator of three container yards in the Newark/Elizabeth port area, is the first company to complete deployment of eTERM Wireless 1.0, to communicate with handheld units.
After several ocean carriers began requesting real-time EDI capability, Ironbound implemented the eTERM desktop application in June 2000. eTERM automated the creation of terminal activity reports and billing processes, and also provided the EDI capabilities to eliminate fax and e-mail communications.
With eTERM Wireless 1.0 now live at Ironbound, gate transactions are sent electronically in real-time to Ironbound's customers, improving tracking accuracy and eliminating redundant processes for Ironbound employees. Previously, employees at the Ironbound gates wrote a paper Equipment Interchange Receipt, or EIR. Then another employee in the Ironbound office keyed the information into eTERM.
EDI Wireless 1.0 now allows Ironbound to capture gate activity data in real-time and integrate it into existing eTERM management and communications applications, closing the circle. With real-time EDI from the depots, ocean carriers increase their equipment utilization and reduce the expense of phone calls and faxes.
As an Internet application, eTERM Wireless Release 1.0 can communicate with any Windows CE web enabled handheld unit. Container yards and terminals can choose the handheld unit and printer that meet their facility's requirements and budget.
