Two state legislators said truckers might be entitled to a tax break if plans to use truck tolls to widen Interstate 81 in Virginia come to fruition.
Tolls collected from mandatory truck-only lanes would be used to pay for about half the cost to widen I-81 to eight lanes. The plan, a proposed public-private partnership, is being reviewed by the Virginia Department of Transportation. Legislation authorizing the truck tolls was signed last week by the governor.
During the Virginia Department of Transportation's annual road hearing, reports the Roanoke Times & World News, State House majority leader Morgan Griffith introduced the concept of a tax break for trucking companies.
"The trucking industry has some legitimate concerns about tolls and the impact they will have on the economy of our area," he said. Future I-81 legislation needs to take that into consideration, he said.
Also during the hearing, trucking company representatives said all users should share the cost, cars as well as trucks.
