A new Florida law will make it easier for state officials to build more toll roads in the state.

According to the Tallahassee Democrat, the measure is part of a massive transportation bill. It creates a “Florida Turnpike Enterprise,” a division of the state Department of Transportation that would be free of many bureaucratic rules. The new agency would be able to develop hotels and convention centers, towing services and other commercial ventures along state turnpikes, using the money to build new roads. It also more than doubles the amount of time a toll road has to become self-supporting.
Critics, especially environmentalists, say the move will just lead to more urban sprawl and more damage to the environment.
