A bill in the Nebraska state legislature would turn commercial carrier officers into state troopers,
giving them the same pay and benefits to keep turnover down.
Col. Tom Nesbitt, superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol, is pushing the bill. The carrier division has a high turnover, he says, because many officers leave to become higher-paid troopers. Right now there are 15 vacancies out of a 90-person division. The starting salary of a state trooper is $30,680, compared to only $26,291 for carrier officers. Retirement benefits are also considered better for troopers.
The measure has the support of the governor. The main opponent is Sen. Ernie Chambers of Omaha, who said the legislation is unnecessary. He says having a separate carrier enforcement force lets truckers know Nebraska takes it trucking laws seriously. However, Nesbitt says there would still be a carrier division.
The bill, LB 470, advanced to a second round of debate Wednesday on a 31-1 vote, with Chambers casting the only "no" vote.
