International Truck and Engine Corp. will soon offer the ZF Meritor FreedomLine transmission.

The fully automated mechanical heavy-duty truck transmission with a "no clutch pedal" design will be available on the International 9200i, 9400i, 9900I and 9900ix model vehicles beginning April 1, 2002.
The FreedomLine transmission's exclusive "no clutch pedal" design is easier for drivers to learn and operate than three-pedal automated systems, according to the company. Drivers can choose from fully automatic or driver-controlled modes without clutching and shifting.
The transmission will also benefit fleet operators through increased fuel economy and an expanded driver pool. The electronically controlled shifting senses loads and automatically knows when to skip shifts, increasing fuel economy by more than 4 percent. In addition, its ease of use means that it will be simpler for both entry-level and veteran drivers to learn.
ZF Meritor is featuring a FreedomLine-equipped International truck for demo rides-and-drives at this year's Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., this week where the announcement was made.
