Vermont officials say they will no longer issue oversize load permits to trucks unless the state is part of a direct route.

The move by the Motor Vehicles Department is the result of a recent breakdown of a 192-foot-long rig carrying a 72-ton reactor vessel head from Connecticut to Utah. The rig took a circuitous route north up Interstate 91, east to Vermont Route 103, then south on U.S. Route 7 en route to New York state.
Although the shipment was the largest and heaviest in the state's history, it only required a $20 permit. Authorities think the oversized load may have been routed through Vermont because Massachusetts would charge a lot more.
