About 800 truck drivers and mechanics for one of the nation's largest postal service contractors are on strike.

According to published and broadcast reports, the mail transport employees of Dallas-based Pat Salmon and Sons voted to strike when they weren't able to reach agreement on a contract after two years of negotiations. Sticking points include rising health insurance rates and a lack of short-term disability or paid sick leave.
"We respect our employees' right to strike or not to strike," Jeff Boone, vice president, said in a news release. "However, we intend to honor our postal contracts and deliver your mail. The American public expects and deserves its mail, and we will deliver."
Boone said the company is willing to go back to the negotiation table.
The strike affects five terminals organized by the American Postal Workers Union: Dallas, Memphis, Tenn., Shreveport, La., Little Rock, Ark., and Albuquerque, N.M. The Dallas location has been unionized only since last summer, after a bitter struggle. Employees at the company's two Florida hubs have been organized by the Teamsters, and two others remain non-union.
