USFreightways and its employees have raised more than $830,000 to assist with relief efforts in New York and Washington, D.C., and provide scholarships for children of deceased members of the Armed Forces.
Employees were given the choice of writing a check or participating through a payroll deduction program, with USFreightways matching every dollar donated to a maximum company contribution of $500,000.
"Our employees responded immediately with their hearts and their checkbooks,” said Samuel K. Skinner, the company's chairman, president and CEO. “We already have checks in house totaling $116,990.58 with $42,475.47 allocated for the American Red Cross and $74,515.11 allocated for the 911 Armed Forces Scholarship Fund. Additional funds of $176, 726.22 have been pledged through payroll deduction plans."
Even before the corporate relief plan was formulated, employees of USF Red Star donated $93,492.34 to the American Red Cross and bought and delivered supplies (gloves, masks, etc.) to workers at Ground Zero totaling an additional $28,000.
The Institute of International Education – providing its services at no cost -- will administer the scholarship program and a centralized clearing house for scholarships will be established so that dependents affected by the September 11 events can find the best financing for their education with a minimum of paperwork and confusion.
