The National Industrial Transportation League, an association for shippers, is considering giving higher status to carriers.

According to Traffic World, a proposal under consideration by the group’s board of directors would for the first time allow carriers to become associate members. Although carriers are currently allowed to joint NITL, associate member status would give them more power on voting issues.
The League is currently known as “The Voice of the Shipper.” League Chairman Van Hayes told the paper, “We want to be known as the Voice of the Freight Transportation Industry.”
Some members liked the idea of creating a better environment for shippers and carriers to work together. The issue of long waits at the docks comes to mind as a prime candidate. But some shippers aren’t so happy about the idea. One shipper told the paper that this was “a first step in allowing the fox to guard the henhouse.”
