National Guard troops have been called on to help inspect vehicles coming into Arizona from Mexico.

According to the Associated Press, Arizona Gov. Jane Hull has activated 45 guardsmen to help Customs operations at the Douglas, Nogales, Naco and San Luis border crossings for up to 60 days.
The goal is to help cut down on the long waits by cars and trucks wanting to cross the border, where security has tightened since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Of special concern this time of year is commercial trucks bringing winter produce into the country. About 70 percent of the nation’s supply comes through the Nogales port, according to the AP, and long delays could increase spoilage and financially devastate brokers, truckers and Mexican growers.
The Guard soldiers have been training with U.S. Customs officials. They will work in the cargo areas, doing what’s called secondary inspection work, such as opening hoods or manning high-tech equipment used to scan trucks for drugs and other contraband.
