A proposal is on the table in Wyoming to raise the state’s fuel tax by as much as 5 cents per gallon in order to comply with a state Supreme Court order to improve the state’s school buildings.

The tax would raise $32 million for the schools and about $48 million for the state Department of Transportation to go toward a 25-year highway improvement plan, according to the Associated Press.
State Rep. Jim “Bubba” Shivler told the AP he likes the plan, pointing out that the 14-cent tax is largely paid by out-of-state truckers and tourists.
The transportation money was requested by Gov. Jim Geringer.
