Commercial vehicles will be inspected before being allowed to enter four bridge-tunnels in the Hampton Roads, Va., area.

According to the Associated Press, extra state troopers are being assigned to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel, Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, Midtown Tunnel and Downtown Tunnel. There are two troopers assigned to each bridge per shift, plus at least one motor carrier trooper assigned to each tunnel, who will inspect commercial vehicles before allowing them to enter the tunnel and keep a sharp eye out for any irregularities in hazardous materials loads.
No troopers will be at the 17-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel because it has its own police force. In addition, troopers will no be posted full time at the Virginia Department of Transportation's two tunnels on Interstate 77 in southwest Virginia (East River Mountain Tunnel and Big Walker Mountain Tunnel), presumably because they are not in a heavily populated area.
