More than 500 truckers have to re-take their commercial license test in Florida, and more re-tests are on the way.
Letters notifying drivers of the retesting are being sent out to 563 truckers, most of whom are linked to a Naples area truck-driving skills tester. Nearly 50 are connected to an investigation involving a Miami-Dade driver's license office, where seven examiners have been on paid leave since June pending the outcome of that investigation.
Skip Hood, a state highway safety analyst, told The Miami Herald that the state has not accused any drivers of breaking the law. "We simply have reason to think that these drivers may not have been properly tested," he said.
Anyone who fails to take the re-test will have their CDLs revoked. Truckers must go to one of Florida's six state-operated testing centers. They will not be permitted to take the test over at a privately operated tester. About 90 percent of Florida's CDL tests are given at these 450 private third-party facilities.
Hundreds more drivers might be ordered to be retested as the result of a recent federal indictment involving three Florida men, including a former worker at a Fort Lauderdale testing firm, according to the paper.
