The California Highway Patrol and the California Trucking Assn. kicked off a campaign this week targeting unsafe trucks in the Sacramento area.

According to the Sacramento Bee, part of the campaign involves specially marked white vehicles. The white cruisers, which come from an existing CHP fleet, do not have lights on the top, but California Highway Patrol is written on them.
Officers will be watching for drivers who are under the influence, fatigued, following too closely, speeding or making unsafe turns. They are targeting Interstate 5, Highway 50 and Highway 99. The campaign will continue through December.
Last year, the Sacramento area CHP counted 1,728 truck-involved accidents, according to the paper, with 22 fatalities. Accidents involving trucks have increased 8 to 10 percent from the same time last year.
