Truckers with pickups or deliveries in New York City better allow at least an hour extra time for increased checkpoints at tunnels and bridges into the city.

Evan Perron, a trucker who was delivering a load from Chicago, told The New York Times it took four and a half hours to go round trip from the George Washington Bridge to Kennedy Airport - a 20-mile trip - and that was on a normally uncrowded Sunday afternoon.
At the George Washington Bridge, the primary route for trucks in and out of the city or those passing through on I-95, the lower level has been closed to commercial vehicles. The elimination of those lanes is causing major backups on the upper levels. Driver Bennie Foy reported a 30-minute backup heading southbound, and talked to one trucker who experienced an hour and a half delay late at night.
In addition to the closing, trucks are under closer scrutiny because of concerns about possible use by terrorists. Authorities are scouring every truck and van at some checkpoints, reports the New York Daily News.
