Crossett, Ark.-based carrier Ashley Transportation closed its doors last week, putting about 125 people out of work.

According to published reports, the family-owned company will sell its 104 tractors and 232 trailers. Owner Doug Reed formed Ashley Transportation during 1989. Despite good customers, including a large account with Georgia-Pacific, skyrocketing fuel and insurance costs proved to be too much.
The company hauled dry van freight nationwide, with particular emphasis on the eastern half of the country. Ashley earned several awards for good service to Georgia-Pacific, including trucking company of the year.
