Teamsters President James P. Hoffa has pulled out of a scheduled Friday campaign debate against Tom Leedham, who is running against him for the union's top spot.

According to published reports, Hoffa will send Chuck Mack, president of Teamsters Joint Council 7 in California's Bay Area and a union international vice president in his place.
Hoffa reportedly feels that it is more important for him to spend the time campaigning against a right-to-work referendum scheduled for Sept. 26 in Oklahoma. Because of the air travel situation in the wake of last week's terrorist attacks, Hoffa was concerned that he might have problems traveling to Washington, D.C., for the debate and then getting back to Oklahoma.
Leedham has filed an appeal of Election Administrator William Wertheimer's decision to allow the debate to go forward without Hoffa.
