An audit says the Nevada Highway Patrol needs to do a better job of inspecting the state's trucks.

According to the Associated Press, auditors said the state has more than 2,000 motor carriers, but no division personnel dedicated solely to inspecting them. Yet federal funds are available to hire at least three inspectors to do motor carrier compliance reviews.
The audit, performed by the state's Division of Internal Audits, recommended using civilian personnel to perform compliance reviews, freeing up troopers for law enforcement duties. This is common in Western states, according to the auditors.
Nevada had a higher rate of fatalities involving heavy trucks that other Western states, according to the auditor's report.
