A new service is offering safety courses via streaming video on the Internet.

Trucker Safety Vision uses streaming video via the Internet to give companies and their drivers 10-minute safety courses. A new safety video is uploaded each month. Videos from past months are archived. The new service is available to companies on a monthly subscription basis.
According to spokesman Tom Smelas, the company has kept subscription costs low so trucking companies of all sizes can take advantage of it. The service also offers a more flexible way to reach drivers. "I've been in terminal management and safety, and try to get drivers together for safety meetings," he says. "A driver can view this at home or on the road. It allows you to work with a driver's schedule."
Trucker Safety Vision will launch its first video, on avoiding sideswipe accidents, on Sept. 1. Future topics will include avoiding backing accidents, winter driving techniques and construction zone hazards.
Trucker Safety Vision is a product of Porter-Coleman Communications, an Atlanta-based advertising agency that has been serving the transportation industry since 1986. Smelas emphasized that this venture will be separate from its advertising clients and will have no recruiting aspects. Videos are professionally produced, based on information from insurance companies, safety organizations and knowledge gained from working with trucking companies.
