Indianapolis' Eastside will soon have four "flyovers" that will replace tight-turn loop ramps where truckers are at risk for rollovers.
The new ramps will make it easier to merge back and forth between I-465 and I-74, reports The Indianapolis Star. A third flyover will connect northbound I-465 to Shadeland Aveneue. A fourth flyover eventually will connect the I-465 and I-70 interchange.
The two flyovers at the I-74/I-465 interchange are under construction. One has been completed but is not open to the public; the other should be done by the end of the summer, with the entire $38 million interchange project scheduled to open by November.
Highway officials told the paper that the tight loop ramps off I-465 have had their share of truck rollovers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, about 750 heavy truck occupants are killed each years in rollovers nationwide.
