New York City officials are expanding a system that charges trucks for parking while they load and unload.

A variation on congestion pricing went into effect in November in a five-block area of midtown Manhattan. Trucks and other commercial vehicles can park in a special commercial parking zone by paying $1 for one hour, $3 for two hours or $6 for three hours. The program was designed to keep trucks from double-parking or staying in the area for too long. The system uses computerized parking meters; companies can buy prepaid debit cards to use in the meters. The price is expected to rise to $9 for three hours, according to The New York Times.
The system is working, say officials; the average amount of time a truck stays parked in the area has dropped. So now officials are expanding the system over the next few months to cover more of Manhattan - from West 43rd to West 45th Streets between Fifth Avenue and Broadway. Officials are also considering installing the system in the congested commercial cores of Downtown Brooklyn and Jamaica, Queens, reported the paper.
