This was the 11th year that CAT Scale's 1938 Kenworth participated in The History Channel Great Race. This timed road rally of vintage vehicles began June 17 in Atlanta and crossed 13 states and visited more than 44 cities and towns for lunch, dinner and pit stops in its 14-day run.
The CAT Scale team placed 13th overall in the Sportsman Division with a time of 1:40 off of perfect. Only 1 minute separated 1st from 13th place.
Drivers in the race are competing against the clock, not each other. The race is designed as a timed road rally with surprise checkpoints along the route. The goal is to arrive at the checkpoints at exactly the correct time -- not too early, not too late. This proves to be a challenge when you don't know where the checkpoints are going to be, so you have to follow directions exactly at all times.
This year's driver/navigator duo consisted of Dave Meier, Bettendorf, Iowa, and Richard Seehuus, Chattanooga, Tenn. Meier says he loves the challenge. "This is as much fun as you can legally have."
More than 100 other driver and navigator teams shared the same sentiment. This year, 125 vehicles started the race in Atlanta, with 119 crossing the finish line in Pasadena.
