Terex Corp. of Westport, Conn., a maker of earthmoving and lifting equipment, will participate in Qualcomm's heavy equipment consortium.

Qualcomm hopes to standardize mobile communications systems for the heavy equipment industry. The consortium will work to develop satellite, terrestrial and multi-mode wireless systems based on a common, modular, ruggedized hardware platform. These wireless systems will connect to Qualcomm's wireless data network management center.
Equipment maker Komatsu America International Co. and United Rentals have also joined the Qualcomm consortium.
