Tennessee officials have tabled a resolution seeking to restrict retreads.

After seeing the latest retreading equipment and materials during the recent World ITRA Expo and getting a short course on the importance of retreading from Marvin Bozarth, International Tire & Rubber Association executive director, State Sen. Douglas Henry and Maj. Butch Lawson, head of Tennessee's Department of Safety, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, agreed to drop a resolution that asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to "explore the feasibility of prohibiting the use of recapped tires on commercial motor vehicles."
If the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and Congress had responded to Tennessee's request, it would have been the end of retreading in the United States, according to ITRA, and would have meant soaring operating costs for the trucking industry.
