Qualcomm Inc., San Diego, providers of OmniTracs and OmniExpress mobile communications, has announced formation of a wireless heavy equipment consortium.

Equipment maker Komatsu America International Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo-based Komatsu Ltd., and United Rentals, the equipment rental company, have joined the Qualcomm consortium.
Qualcomm hopes to standardize mobile communications systems for the heavy equipment industry. The consortium will work to develop satellite, terrestrial and multi-mode wireless systems based on a common, modular, ruggedized hardware platform. These wireless systems will connect to Qualcomm's wireless data network management center.
Qualcomm has invited other equipment manufacturers and heavy equipment fleets to join the consortium and is in discussions with a number of potential members.
According to the Qualcomm announcement, consortium members will see improved customer service and new revenue sources, as well as tightly integrated fleet service.
