Commercial vehicle inspectors in Maine will soon get laptops to allow them to instantly access motor carrier safety records online.

According to the Associated Press, some state police troopers who do truck inspections currently can use an outdated electronic device that lets them tap into the federal motor carrier safety database. But the new faster system is expected to help inspectors catch drivers whose licenses are suspended in other states.
Dispatchers don't have the time to run license and registration checks on all truckers who are stopped, Maine Trooper Christopher Cyr told reporters. The new system will allow police to bypass the dispatchers.
The database, compiled by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, tracks accident records, driving records, vehicle inspection and safety compliance history of registered motor carriers in all 50 states.
However, problems have been discovered in many cases where state CDL information did not make it into the central database. (See "Tough New CDL Rules Proposed," May 3, 2001.)
The new system is expected to be up and running by this fall.
Parents Against Tired Truckers, which is based in the state, hailed the new system.
