Karen E. Rasmussen, Director of Government Relations for Ryder Systems, has been named President of the Arizona Motor Transport Assn.

Rasmussen succeeds the late Terry Smalley, who headed the association for 27 years before his death last April. Her appointment is effective July 1.
Rasmussen is a veteran trucking industry advocate. She was at the California Trucking Assn. from 1984 to 1997, serving in a variety of capacities, including Director of Government Relations, Director of Policy and Vice President.
In 1997 she joined Ryder as chief of State Government Relations, based in Sacramento, Calif. Three years later she moved to Washington, D.C., where she continued to handle state relations, and took on federal policy issues such as the environment, taxes and transportation. She also managed the Ryder Political Action Committee.
Rasmussen serves as a director for five other state trucking associations: California, Florida, Massachusetts, Missouri and Tennessee.
