Omaha-based Nexterna Inc., a wireless data company, has acquired the assets of FreightQuest, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cummins Inc.
FreightQuest is a wirelesss dispatch system ideal for LTL and multiple-stop operations.
In fleets equipped with FreightQuest, each truck is equipped with a portable Windows-CE-based vehicle terminal. A graphic touch screen provides a simple user interface that enables drivers to enter data and send messages without using a keyboard.
The handheld battery-powered terminal can be removed from its cradle and used outside the vehicle to obtain detailed information on each pick-up or delivery, including customer’s signature, times of arrival and departure, exception and pallet reports, available space on a truck and more.
At the dispatch end, Windows NT-based FreightQuest screens combine vehicle location, driver/trip task lists, resource availability and maps to display fleet status and availability.
Using the system's browser-based drag-and-drop functions to schedule pick-ups and deliveries, dispatchers don’t have to key data by hand.
The current version of FreightQuest software has been field tested at LTL and intermodal sites for more than a year.
FreightQuest will be marketed as part of Nexterna's FleetGo product line for the transportation industry. Nexterna is owned by the Union Pacific Corp., which is also the corporate parent of LTL carrier Overnite Transportation of Richmond, Va.
