Atlanta-based Extendea Inc., has entered the mobile logistics communications market with software licensed and adapted from SRI International, a research institute based in California’s Silicon Valley.

The wireless technology platform uses components of SRI's InCON command and control systems developed for the U.S. military. The software works on a variety of wireless networks and features modules for scheduling, mapping, confirmation, messaging and reporting.
The confirmation module includes wireless signature capture for proof of delivery. According to Extendea, the system will work with off-the-shelf hardware such as handheld computers, or PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) and certain wireless phones.
The cost will be roughly $1,000 per truck. Operating expenses, including air-time, will run about $100 per month.
SRI International is an independent research and technology development organizations that was founded in 1946 as Stanford Research Institute.
