The North Dakota Legislature has approved a bill that would raise the speed limit on Interstate highways from 70 to 75 mph.

The measure was approved as an addition to the state Department of Transportation's budget bill. Gov. John Hoeven has the option of vetoing the speed-limit provision while still approving the rest of the DOT bill.
The House killed proposals for higher speed limits twice, according to published reports, before approving it as part of the DOT bill last week.
The limit has been 70 mph since 1996.
