A bill under consideration in the Washington state legislature would increase the minimum weight of trucks required to stop at weigh stations.

SB5138 would change the minimum from the current 16,000 pounds to 26,000 pounds. This would bring the state in line with neighboring Idaho and Oregon, which require only vehicles over 26,000 pounds to stop at an open weigh station.
The weight requirement was increased from 10,000 to 16,000 in 1999.
Ninety days after adjournment of session in which bill is passed.
Those testifying in favor of the bill said the requirement would be consistent with Oregon and Idaho and would be good for border counties. Opponents fear it could result in an increase in the number of overweight vehicles on the state's highways.
The bill is SB5138.
