The European Commission is proposing mandatory training for professional truck and bus drivers.

"Professional training is a very important issue that should never be forgotten: it is a crucial factor in the constant improvement of working conditions in this activity," said transport commissioner Loyola de Palacio, according to published reports. She did note that it is essential that the industry be closely involved in training arrangements.
The proposal sets 420 hours of basic training for younger drivers and 210 for others entering the profession, plus 35 hours every five years of continuous training.
