A bill that would have allowed Iowa speed limits for cars to be increased to 70 mph while keeping trucks at 65 appears to be dead.

According to published reports, supporters of the bill say they can't get the votes to pass the bill. They blame a heavy lobbying campaign by safety advocates.
House Majority Leader Christopher Rants, a backer of higher speed limits, said he has taken the bill off the debate agenda. Rants said that although from surveys, he knows most people support higher speed limits, those who oppose them are more vocal. Gov. Tom Vilsack had also expressed opposition to the bill.
