Fewer trucks are being weighed and inspected in Nevada.

According to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the number of large trucks weighed dropped 20 percent between 1997 and 1999. The number of citations issued for overweight trucks dropped 36 percent, says the paper, while the number of fatal crashes involving trucks has risen from 27 to 41 in the state.
One reason for the drop in inspections is that two inspections stations on I-15 have been closed for renovation. The site near Sloan is scheduled to open later this year. Inadequate staffing is another reason. Nevada has funding for 56 troopers to conduct truck inspections, but about 30 percent of those positions are vacant.
The managing director of the Nevada Motor Transport Assn. told the paper that while the trucking industry would welcome more inspections, the recent increase in accidents is the result of increased traffic.
