San Diego-based Qualcomm announced that LTL carrier Roadway Express will deploy the OmniExpress mobile communications system at 20 of the company’s 388 terminals.

Roadway helped Qualcomm develop the OmniExpress system, designed specifically for LTL and other local or regional operations. Qualcomm first deployed the systems called Roadway Digital Dispatch at two Roadway terminals in 1999.
OmniExpress differs from Qualcomm's OmniTRACS truckload product primarily in its use of the Sprint PCS ground-based network rather than satellite for mobile communications. The system focuses on local pickup and delivery rather than wide-ranging over-the-road trucking.
Otherwise, OmniExpress offers many of the same benefits as OmniTRACS, including real-time two-way messaging, GPS vehicle tracking and integration with routing and back office applications.
